burning down the house

In doing so, it has become a beloved piece of music that continues to resonate with listeners around the world. The song’s appeal to a wide range of people, regardless of their political or cultural background, speaks to the universal themes it touches upon. By tapping into the visceral emotions of rebellion, lust, and joy, the Talking Heads created a song that remains relevant today.

The Influence of Funk and R&B

Still, others have connected the song to the experience of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with the line “Watch out, you might get what you’re after” alluding to temptation and loss of control. Jay-Z was going to ask Mary J. Blige to duet on "Empire State of Mind," but he decided on Alicia Keys when he heard the piano stabs on the track. In Australia it peaked at a modest No. 94, while in the UK, where Talking Heads would release 14 charting singles, it failed to chart.

The Meaning Behind The Song: “Burning Down The House” by Talking Heads

Vegetarian Fred Schneider of the B-52's got the idea for "Rock Lobster" at an Atlanta disco when a projector displayed images of lobsters on a grill. The "Don't Stop Believin'" resurgence started when the Journey song was used in a roller skating scene of the 2003 movie Monster. "Burning Down the House" is a song by new wave band Talking Heads, released in July 1983 as the first single from their fifth studio album Speaking in Tongues. As music critic Chris Molanphy has noted, “Burning Down The House” is a song that manages to be both catchy and meaningful. It reflects the cultural and political context of its time while also tapping into universal and timeless themes.

In September of 2023, commemorating the film's 40th anniversary, a remastered version was released across America in IMAX theaters, and later in conventional theaters worldwide. Today, “Burning Down The House” is considered a classic of the 1980s and an enduring part of the Talking Heads’ legacy. It has been covered and sampled by numerous artists, from Tom Jones to Bon Iver, and its place in popular culture has endured. “Burning Down The House” is notable for its use of funk and R&B elements, including a driving bassline, punchy horns, and syncopated rhythms. David Byrne has said that he was inspired by the work of funk legends James Brown and George Clinton, and the song reflects his fascination with the genre. The addition of horns, played by funk musician Wayne Shorter, gives the track an irresistible energy that complements the powerful vocals and intricate percussion.

The single was backed with Jones' live recordings of the EMF song "Unbelievable" and the Beatles' "Come Together", as well as remixes of "Burning Down the House" by Delakota, Pepe Deluxé and DJ Scissorkicks. Welsh singer Tom Jones recorded a version of "Burning Down the House" with Swedish pop band the Cardigans for his 1999 collaborations album, Reload. In common with the other tracks on the album, the recording was made with the collaborators' choice of producer and studio, in this case Tore Johansson and Tambourine Studios in Malmö, Sweden. Lead singer David Byrne has said that he intentionally left the lyrics vague in order to create a feeling of warmth and excitement rather than frustration or anger. It didn’t appear in the UK Singles Chart at all until Tom Jones and The Cardigans covered it and made it a Top 10 hit in 1999. As one of the major hits of Jones' later career, it appears on numerous compilations of Jones' work.

Holly Knight talks about some of the hit songs she wrote, including "The Warrior," "Never" and "The Best," and explains some songwriting philosophy, including how to think of a bridge. Ian talks about his 3 or 4 blatant attempts to write a pop song, and also the ones he most connected with, including "Locomotive Breath." The inspiration for Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" came from the songwriter worrying about his girlfriend, who was out at bars all day while he was at home penning songs. A young boy resembling Byrne takes his place from time to time; eventually, younger counterparts start moving the arms of all four band members to play the music.

After the screen goes blank, both young and adult Byrne leave the stage, and the video ends with an extended close-up of Byrne's face projected on a highway at night. “Burning Down The House” by Talking Heads is a song that speaks to the complexity and richness of the human experience. Its fusion of different musical genres, its use of deliberate ambiguity in the lyrics, and its reflection of the historical and cultural context of its time all combine to create a piece of music that is both meaningful and enjoyable. As we continue to revisit the music of the past, “Burning Down The House” remains one of the most beloved and significant songs of its era.

Max Illidge (credited as Max Loving), vocalist of the band 40 Below Summer, and Rockets Redglare appear as the younger selves of Byrne and Jerry Harrison, respectively. Old Time Music is proud to have such a passionate and talented team of writers who share their love for music with our readers. The early 1980s were a time of great change in American society, with the rise of Ronald Reagan and conservative politics leading to a backlash against progressive values. The music of the era reflected this shift, with many artists struggling to find their place in a rapidly changing landscape. One of the most interesting aspects of “Burning Down The House” is its use of deliberate ambiguity in the lyrics. While the chorus (“Burning down the house!”) is clear, the verses are more mysterious and open to interpretation.

'A good way to introduce a dark shade in your home is by painting just a section of a wall to create a zone within a room. This could work very well in modern properties with an open plan living space.

A light-filled converted attic offers the ideal situation for a secluded office, while storage can easily be tucked under the eaves to make the most of unused space. Decorating with antiques can be a great way to bring character and unique style to a home office, particularly if you want to keep the walls white or wall-to-wall bookshelves prevent you from hanging artwork. In this space the desk and shelves are made in the same wood as the living room paneling to give a streamlined and spacious look. A tall house plant also helps to screen-off the area, while also bringing an uplifting pop off green and softness to the room. Despite being seemingly complicated, office design is no longer such an overwhelming task. In an otherwise minimalist interior, the right light fixture can make a striking statement – the curved silhouette of an arc lamp or a bright anglepoise adds an instant Mid-century feel to a room without going overboard. Prioritize making the space as functional as possible, with high-quality furniture that encourages good posture, as well as suiting your aesthetic requirements.

The Shanghai Transaction Succeed Office, designed by One House Design, reimagines office space with a focus on combining multiple functional areas. The design explores the combination and interaction of multiple spaces by excavating the distinctive features of the company, and by extracting, breaking down, and developing from the elements of its logo. Repeating organic forms, undulating silhouettes, and multi-dimensional mapping overlap create a fluid space that mimics a wormhole. The project integrates exhibition, office, banquet, and recreational activity areas, presenting a unique encounter between people and space. A well-planned office design is important because it improves productivity and has a positive effect on employees. The average adult spends over 50% of their daytime hours in an office, so the office layout must be functional.

The polarization in todays Congress has roots that go back decades

the last house on the left 1972

On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari (Sandra Peabody) has blossomed into liberated womanhood, but she’s about to step into a world of burnouts and lowlifes that are eager to take advantage. Though her parents (Eleanor Shaw and Richard Towers) are concerned about her vulgar friend Phyllis (Lucy Grantham) driving her from their country home to an urban “slum” to see a rock concert, they reluctantly respect the fact that she’s growing up. Once they get to the city, however, Phyllis tries to procure a little “grass” from a young junkie on a stoop and she and Mari are led straight to the lion’s den. Before they know it, they’re trapped in a room with a gang of recent prison escapees, led by Krug (David A Hess), a rapist and serial killer. When fledgling director Wes Craven took this film to the MPAA, they labeled it with an "X" rating. Wanting an R for wider release, Craven went back and removed 10 minutes of footage.

American horror film by Wes Craven / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But the dynamics behind today’s congressional polarization have been long in the making. The analysis of members’ ideological scores finds that the current standoff between Democrats and Republicans is the result of several overlapping trends that have been playing themselves out – and sometimes reinforcing each other – for decades. A disturbed gang of youths kidnap, torture and murder two teenage girls; unbeknownst to the gang, the parents of one of the girls live nearby... A mixture of red and blue food coloring mixed with caramel syrup was used for the fake blood, which - contrary to most movie blood - actually looks real. The parents accidentally find out the identities of the killers, because of a stolen locket and some blood-stained clothing in their baggage.

– the soul-sickening dread and panic that underscore the film’s images have a way of seeping into your system for ever. Rarely has there been so little distance between an audience and the raw emotion a film’s characters are experiencing on screen. On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to attend a rock concert in the city. Attempting to score some drugs on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic Krug. Accordingly, like most political science work that employs DW-NOMINATE scores, this analysis focuses on the primary liberal/conservative scale.

Mari, Seventeen, is Dying. Even For Her the Worst is Yet to Come!

I still remember that humid summer day when we sat in his house and watched the film. In addition, the movie gave us thrills that we didn’t even know we wanted (like the ending where Mrs. Collingwood bites off the penis of one of the antagonists…how often do you get to see that in a film, or anywhere for that matter?). After the movie ended, I convinced Ted to let me take the video home so I could watch it again late at night while my parents were asleep before returning it the next day.

Meanwhile, back in the United States, the wave gory and violent movies referred to as “torture porn” emerged. In a way similar to how Craven was affected by images of the Vietnam War when making The Last House on the Left, critics argue that graphic images of terrorism in a post-9/11 world directly led to the bloody movies of the 2000s. The majority of “torture porn” veers too far into splatter to really be seen as a direct descendent of The Last House on the Left, but the influence does come through occasionally. Specifically, Darren Lynn Bousman, director of multiple Saw sequels, has said The Last House on the Left is his favorite horror movie, showing that Craven’s influence lives on. While true transgression in popular horror cinema lay relatively dormant for many years in the 80s and 90s, France picked it back up with the New French Extremity movement that began in the late 90s and flourished in the 2000s.

One of the harshest rebukes of The Last House on the Left came from the United Kingdom. It was refused certification in the United Kingdom in 1974, barring it from being shown in theaters. The movie slipped through the cracks on VHS in the early 1980s, but shortly after it was once again banned during the “video nasty” moral panic. It wasn’t until 2008 that the uncut version of The Last House on the Left finally received a classification for release by the British Board of Film Classification. But once again, controversy led to a notoriety that has stuck with the film for half a century.

Behind the Shadows of ‘Bag of Lies’: Dialogue with David Andrew James

The plot of The Last House on the Left is centered on the rape and murder of two teenage girls. What happens before, after, and especially during these vile acts outraged audiences. Wes Craven wanted to make a movie that didn’t flinch away from showing realistic violence.

Craven cut the film numerous times for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to rate it R. Internationally, the United Kingdom refused to certify the film for release, and while briefly released on home video in the 1980s, the "video nasty" scare led to the banning of the film until 2002. The Last House on the Left was released in the United States on August 30, 1972.

In the 2010s and beyond, horror movies with overt political and social statements began to catch on with mainstream audiences. Horror has a long history of incorporating political and social themes into its stories (just like Craven did in 1972), but a new generation of fans began discovering that fact with movies like Get Out (2018) and Black Christmas (2019). In the 2020s, with social changes being a hot topic of debate and mainstream horror feeling somewhat safe, the environment feels ready for an explosive change just like in the early 1970s. Whether or not the dark magic of Wes Craven’s crude masterpiece can be replicated remains to be seen.

Indeed, a Pew Research Center analysis finds that, on average, Democrats and Republicans are farther apart ideologically today than at any time in the past 50 years. Get our newsletter and join our community powered by horror fans like you. This article takes a brief look at The Last House on the Left, focusing on the intention, influence, and legacy of one of the most transgressive movies of the 1970s. Its visceral brutality is more repulsive than engrossing, but The Last House on the Left nevertheless introduces director Wes Craven as a distinctive voice in horror.

The consensus among critics at the time was that the film was just an ugly, violent exploitation movie, although Roger Ebert praised the film for its dramatic tension and scenes of unflinching terror. Modern reviews of the film usually give it high praise, with a few caveats. It’s not exactly what I would call an “enjoyable” movie in the same way that slashers like the Friday the 13th movies can be fun to watch. Rather than watching a hockey-masked killer stalk and kill a bunch of dumb teenagers, we are watching true evil. The violence that occurs in Last House (well at least during the first half) is a horror that is very real, something that happens in the world every day.

As Democrats have grown more liberal over time and Republicans much more conservative, the “middle” – where moderate-to-liberal Republicans could sometimes find common ground with moderate-to-conservative Democrats on contentious issues – has vanished. Southern Democrats, however, were ideologically and demographically quite distinct from Democrats in the rest of the country, so they merited separate study (and we wanted to see if today’s Southern Republicans are similarly distinctive). We chose to use the former Confederate states as our definition of “the South,” as the states that made up the so-called “Solid South” varied somewhat over time and we wanted a consistent, relatively objective definition.

One of the girls' parents, not content with turning to the law, set out to exact an equally brutal revenge on the vicious murderers, who are hiding out in the family's home. The rape and revenge aspect of The Last House on the Left was also a big contender for the most enraging part of the movie, and the attention it received was not lost on exploitation filmmakers. Though it wasn’t the first rape-revenge movie, a wave of films in the subgenre followed the success of The Last House on the Left. Beyond the obvious copycats, movies like Death Wish (1974), Act of Vengeance (1974), Trip With Teacher (1975), and I Spit on Your Grave (1978) took the format into different directions. Changes in social standards altered the rape-revenge movie throughout the following decades, but the subgenre has never really gone away.

What most of them lacked was the more nuanced approach to characterization that Craven employed. The group of villains are vile and horrible to varying degrees, but they’re not always portrayed as pure evil. For example, after the frenzy of rape and murder that leads to the deaths of Mari and Phyllis, the trio of Krug, Sadie, and Weasel exchange glances of a detachment that may be something like remorse.

Wes Craven later used the name, KRUG in "A Nightmare On Elm Street" for the films villain, "Freddy KRUEGer. Both of which in films are teenager murderers. "Last House on the Left" is a tough, bitter little sleeper of a movie that's about four times as good as you'd expect. There is a moment of such sheer and unexpected terror that it beats anything in the heart-in-the-mouth line since Alan Arkin jumped out of the darkness at Audrey Hepburn in "Wait Until Dark." Estelle and her husband rush into the woods, where they find Mari's body and decide to take revenge. Estelle pretends to seduce Weasel, bites off his penis, and leaves him to bleed to death. Krug escapes into the living room and overpowers John before manipulating Junior into killing himself.

Enraged, the father takes on the gang single-handedly and murders them. Setting aside the modern details, this is roughly the plot of Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring." Five decades ago, 144 House Republicans were less conservative than the most conservative Democrat, and 52 House Democrats were less liberal than the most liberal Republican, according to the analysis. But that zone of ideological overlap began to shrink, as conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans – increasingly out of step with their caucuses and their constituents – either retired, lost reelection bids or, in a few cases, switched parties.

The Celtic knot in the center of the design is well executed with clean, precise lines and consistent shading. Here is an incredible example of what a large, detailed Celtic piece can be. Small details, like the sutures on the skin, help to complete this interesting ode to the fierce warriors of the Celtic tribes. This retouch of an existing piece brings the old design back to life and gives the wearer years more pleasure from this interesting Celtic tattoo. The intricacy of the knot work is amplified by the consistency of the design and shape of the knots.

A sailor’s knot was traditionally made by sailors as a way of remembering those they left behind to go to sea. The Dara knot has a powerful meaning of having strength under enormous amounts of pressure and still being able to persevere. Not exclusively Celtic, this symbol encompasses four circles with a fifth circle joining them in the knot.

My journey into their mesmerizing labyrinth began during my formative years, living beside an Irish family with a fiery-haired matriarch who proudly sported a Celtic knot tattoo. A Celtic tattoo is a great tattoo to have and is packed with important personal meanings that will last a lifetime. The specific design, style, and elements incorporated into a Celtic hand tattoo are often highly personal. For women it can be just the same, however, for her, there’s an added tattoo meaning of love of life and family. Celtic band tattoos can represent love, luck, Christianity, the Holy Trinity, Paganism, among other meanings.

This knot curves in on itself, twisting with another knot to form a unique and bold design. Here, the knot features in the frame of the tattoo, highlighting a colorful portrait of a woman in the center. Additionally in Celtic mythology, the eagle is traditionally seen as one of the oldest of all creatures, surpassed only by the salmon in wisdom and age. According to stories, St. Patrick used clovers as a symbol for the holy trinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Other tattoos included the Celtic zodiac symbol, used as a way to connect with one’s inner self.

The Celtic Motherhood Knot tattoo, also referred to as the Celtic Mother’s Knot tattoo has two hearts that are tangled continuously in a knot without any end. It implies a mother and a child relationship in the best way for Celtic or Irish people. The knot here is super-subtle (you'll notice it within the stem of the flower under the lilies). The idea is to cobine two designs, and incorporate the knot in a unique way.

They also symbolize the pride with which they carry the tribal culture and heritage. Tribal tattoos are often evidence of strength, valor and chieftain qualities. This knot, in particular, has added Christian significance since the 3 loops represent the holy trinity. The Triquetra tattoo symbolizes unity because of its unbreaking line and symmetrical nature. It also represents everlasting life, which can be taken as a symbol of your spirituality depending on your beliefs.

The stark simplicity of the black ink design resonates deeply with the core themes of the Celtic Cross – loyalty, infinity, and everlasting peace through God. Designing a Celtic Cross tattoo can be an exciting journey, with countless avenues for customization. One can add intricate patterns imbued with personal or cultural significance within the cross or around it. The color palette can be experimented with too – from the traditional grey or white to bold reds or blues. It is also important to remember that almost every Celtic knot tattoo is itself a continuous line that represents the eternity of whatever concept it symbolizes. Now, these simpler tattoo pieces are almost always of Celtic knot tattoos because they can be made with simple black line work.

It’s remarkable to note that in most cases it’s the wearer that conveys significance to the type of tattoo that is worn. These tattoos come in various shapes and images which involve the never-ending loops, that signify the vicious cycle of life and death that never ends. Another component is the orbicular rings that express the connection to the religious powers.

The knot represents not just the unity, but the timeless bond between partners. A sailor, after all, could bring back nothing more enduring than an emblem of love. If you’re looking for a subtle but meaningful Celtic tattoo, then this Celtic turtle tattoo is just the right choice for you. This tattoo includes a green inked small turtle made from Celtic patterns and some black inked shading. This tattoo symbolizes longevity, and the Celtic knots on the turtle represent wisdom.

The Last House on the Left 1972 Turner Classic Movies

the last house on the left 1972

From there, The Last House on the Left gazes blankly as the two young women are bound and gagged, driven out to the woods and subjected to abhorrent acts of violence and sexual abuse. Their struggle for survival is made all the more unnerving by the fact that the woods are right outside Mari’s home and the Keystone Cops her parents have summoned to search for her can do nothing about it. This sets the stage for the “revenge” part of the rape-revenge scenario, when the gang, having bloodily dispatched the two women, hole up at a nearby home they’re late to realize is Mari’s. What follows is another messy fight to the death, this time between the grieving parents and their vile guests.

Her plan is bizarre enough on its own, but couldn’t she have just attacked him when she first got in position? Instead, she chose to engage intimately with him before seeking her revenge? There’s almost no way to view these final scenes as anything but a form of gruesome black comedy. Once you get past that initial revulsion – what kind of sicko would even want to see a movie like this?

Shudder Releases Trailer for Urban Legend Horror Elevator Game

Once filming began, the weight of the script’s contents began to dawn on the cast and crew. The hardcore sex in the script was eliminated because of concerns from cast members, but the violence stayed. Craven states on the commentary track for the home video release that the chaotic style of filming used in The Last House on the Left was meant to emulate the violent news footage coming out of the Vietnam War. People were being confronted with horrific images of war, and Craven thought most horror and action movies failed to confront violence in a way that came anywhere close to what was being shown on the nightly news. By exposing viewers to realistic violence in prolonged sequences, Craven ushered in a new standard of violence for horror and exploitation movies.

The Last House on the Left is a 1972 horror-exploitation film written and directed by Wes Craven. The story was inspired by the 13th century Swedish ballad "Töres döttrar i Wäng". The film has gained acclaim as one of the most controversial movies ever made. The controversial nature of some of the sexual scenes caused the original film reels to be burned. Out of the original 91 minute cut, only 84 minutes still remain intact, though some of the audio has been destroyed. The movie had a budget of $90,000 (about half a million today, adjusted for inflation).

Chris has a degree in film studies at Temple University’s campus in Tokyo, Japan. That’s not to say that The Last House on the Left was made without intention. Craven was fully aware of the social climate in the United States in the early 1970s, and his script reflects his awareness. The women’s liberation movement was gaining momentum by 1970, and the characters of Sadie (Jeramie Rain) and Mari Collingwood (Sandra Peabody) each embody different sides of second-wave feminism in their dialogue.

Cast & Crew

It took that long for the film to not be understood as a mere obscenity, without redeeming value. Many different versions of the film exist on various DVD and VHS releases struck from different cuts of the film, many of them from different countries. To get a completely uncut version is difficult as even some cinema machinists cut footage from prints of the movie before screening it during the 1970s; many copies were cut or "hacked to pieces" and because of this, some scenes have become rarities. I just had this fascination of watching vintage movies and overall love for horror movies.

Coinciding with this, anti-rape movements led to the first rape crisis centers opening in the United States in 1972. It’s up for debate what exactly Craven is trying to say about feminism and rape culture in The Last House on the Left, but what is clear is that he was trying to get a reaction from the audience by focusing on emotionally-charged subjects. The Last House on the Left at 50: Wes Craven’s shock horror retains its power

Many years later, I had an intelligent discussion about the film with my brother-in-law and it opened my eyes as to what I saw in the movie that others missed, and that’s what I’m going to expand upon in this article. Written and directed by one of horror’s most masterful filmmakers, Wes Craven, the film is exploitation cinema at its most raw and unforgiving. Should a director’s intent have any bearing on how a viewer experiences a film? There are some people who believe that Tommy Wiseau’s The Room is a bizarre, hilarious work of art.

We cut from the girls being forced to undress at knifepoint to Mari’s parents baking a cake while a goofy, jaunty tune plays in the background. There was even a warning on the front cover that the film was banned in the U.K.! This has to be an amazing movie if a whole country actually banned it, right? Every weekend when my mom would take me to the video store (renting movies was solely a weekend activity back in those days), I would stand there and read the back of the case until I had memorized it. But every week, the answer was always “No, Justin, pick something else.” Last House on the Left became a legend in my mind, and my inability to actually watch the movie only increased its stature in my adolescent brain.

1972 (1972) and Night of the Lepus (1972) were too far removed from reality to truly unnerve audiences. The splatter movies pioneered by Herschell Gordon Lewis’s Blood Feast (1963) were around, but those movies often had more camp than terror. Italy was making strides with their giallo films like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), but the violence was often stylized in ways that made them seem not quite real. The Last House on the Left was crude, ugly, and unflinching in its portrayal of violence. In the early 1970s, Sean S. Cunningham (best known as the producer/director of Friday the 13th, 1980) met Wes Craven on the set of a softcore pseudo-documentary about sex titled Together (1971). Craven worked as an editor on the film, and he also helped Cunningham direct.

While the film initially received a polarizing reception from critics, it was highly profitable, grossing over $3 million at the domestic box office. Craven has said that The Last House on the Left was inspired, in part, by the explicit footage that was piped into news segments on Vietnam war, but wasn’t reflected by the horror and action films being produced at the time. The country was willing to send its young people off to war, but it couldn’t confront the same violence and death in a theater. It’s hard to define the film’s political point of view, other than a prevailing feeling that wars were being fought at home, too, and that the idealism of the love generation had curdled into bad vibes. It may not be a film about America or Vietnam per se, but it’s an essential mood ring of the early 70s. Most of these copycats were cheap (though maybe fun) imitations of Wes Craven’s film.

Then later, when Mari’s parents enact their revenge on their daughter’s murderers, viewers see that even seemingly “normal” citizens can quickly resort to barbarism and grotesque sexual violence. This blurring of lines, as much or more than anything else, is what enraged so many people. The Last House on the Left was released at a time when horror and exploitation movies were primed for an explosive change. Most films of the time weren’t even attempting to create the kind of grueling horror seen in The Last House on the Left.

Together was a success, so the movie’s distributor offered Cunningham and Craven money to make a horror movie. Cunningham didn’t want to direct, so Craven was given his first opportunity to write and direct his own film. Going back to the discussion I had with my brother-in-law, I tried to explain the virtues of this movie and how I viewed it as a unique piece of art. His rebuttal was that the way I interpreted the film was not what Wes Craven intended. He said that unlike David Lynch’s love of stiff acting to emphasize banality and give scenes a dreamlike quality, the acting in Last House was just the result of incompetent actors and should be seen as such. Along the same lines, he said that while I may view the attempts at comedy as being surreal, they were, in fact, just poorly conceived ideas that didn’t belong in the film.

Regardless of the validity of these anecdotes, The Last House on the Left did meet with strong resistance. In addition to protests and calls from the public for theaters to stop showing the movie, some theaters took it upon themselves to cut scenes out of their prints before screening. The controversy led to a buzz about the movie that helped drive people to go see it, so many theaters continued to show it (with varying degrees of edits). The Last House on the Left ended up making millions at the box office. The actors playing the vicious felons (David Hess, Fred Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, and Marc Sheffler) are as naturalistic as they come. They give amazing performances, especially considering their limited acting experience.

Mike’s teaching emphasizes growing in passion for Jesus through intimacy with God, doing evangelism and missions work from the place of night and day prayer, and the end times. The prayer room webstream began with only one camera in 2003, exposing worship with prayer to a global audience. Over the years we’ve received many reports of believers from all over the world (including Christians in persecuted lands) who are encouraged by watching the prayer room. The webstream also blesses many houses of prayer across the globe by providing live worship with prayer. Our vision is to work in relationship with the wider Body of Christ to engage in the Great Commission, as we seek to walk out the two great commandments to love God and people.

Combining 24/7 Prayers for Justice with 24/7 Works of Justice

Find yourself in the hands of a Father who loves you and who is dedicated to liberating, transforming, and establishing you in His purpose. This is your hour to take your place, engage in your calling, and shape history through prayer and fasting. We launched the Center for Biblical End-Time Studies (CBETS), a three-year program of study through the 150 Bible chapters that are primarily about the end times. In 2002, Dennis and Paula Bowers moved to Kansas City, and Dennis took up the position of leading the café— which offers coffee, tea, smoothies, and a variety of baked goods and food. Located next door to the prayer room, Higher Grounds is frequented for coffee-connects and fellowship by staff and visitors alike. We bought the strip mall on Red Bridge Road in Kansas City on February 26, 2001.

Fill out the form below, and we will contact you to answer any questions you might have about applying to our university. The end-time church will shake the earth in preparation for the return of Jesus. We have an invitation to fill the earth with the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit. History is not primarily a record of darkness but of God’s invading presence. He moves not only to encompass a generation with love but to ignite His own burning light inside them until they fill the darkest regions of the earth with His life. He is inviting you to partner with Him in something greater than you can imagine.

Our desire is that every tribe, tongue, and nation be fully immersed in the beauty of Jesus and the details of His glorious return in their “heart language”—their mother tongue. The prayer room was moved from the trailer on Grandview Road into the remodeled Red Bridge Center, bringing a much-needed addition of space and amenities. The new prayer room was dedicated on March 7, 2003, and continues today as the Global Prayer Room (GPR). In Assisi, Italy, Mike heard the Lord say that He would raise up “friends of the Bridegroom forerunner messengers” to prepare the Bride for Christ’s return. John the Baptist called himself a “friend of the Bridegroom” because he prepared the way for Jesus’ first coming. We are believing the Lord to raise up many such messengers in advance of Jesus’ second coming.

Four months later, on September 19, 1999, prayer and worship extended to the full 24/7 schedule. At our tenth anniversary, on September 19, 2009, our staff members renewed their commitment to serve the Lord in 24/7 prayer with worship and made an additional commitment to serve the Lord and people with 24/7 works of justice. These labors involve mercy ministry (e.g., food, shelter), justice issues (e.g., sanctity of life), missions, and evangelism. Founded by Mike Bickle, the International House of Prayer of Kansas City began on May 7, 1999, with a humble, hungry group of young people crying out to God for thirteen hours each and every day. Four months later, on September 19, these “intercessory missionaries” extended their schedule to 24/7.

The facility has also hosted various IHOPKC meetings, departments, and activities. Lenny and Tracey La Guardia moved to Kansas City to join the International House of Prayer and establish the Children’s Equipping Center (CEC). The families of IHOPKC so appreciate Lenny and Tracey who continue to lead a dedicated team that serves thousands of children (ages 1–12) through camps, conferences, and trainings—whether in our own community, around the nation, or abroad. Some former IHOPKC members have said the church was coercive and cult-like; the church has stated that it’s elder-led, has checks in place for leaders, and is committed to safety against sexual, emotional, physical, and spiritual abuse. Staff at IHOPKC number around 2,000, all full-time missionaries who raise their own support, according to the ministry website.

The International House of Prayer has continued in non-stop prayer led by worship teams since September 19, 1999, and is committed to combining 24/7 prayers for justice with 24/7 works of justice. Around 1,500 people (staff members, students, interns) serve full-time on the missions base, investing fty hours per week in the prayer room, classroom, and ministry outreaches. Mike is also the founder of the International House of Prayer University which includes a full-time Bible school, music school, and media school. We refer to our full-time staff at the International House of Prayer as “intercessory missionaries.” They raise their own support to work as full-time missionaries who reach out to others from a lifestyle of prayer and worship. Today, about 2,000 believers (staff, students, and interns) serve full-time, investing fifty hours per week, as they go from the prayer room to the classroom and then to ministry outreaches and works of service. Also, as those who are committed to the forerunner message, we are spiritually equipping ourselves to prepare others for the unique dynamics of the generation in which the Lord returns.

As different ethnic groups continued to grow in our community, more languages were added to prayer meetings. On June 10, 2013, we dedicated the All Nations Prayer Room to the Lord where prayer with worship was led 85 hours per week in nine languages—Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Farsi, Portuguese, French, and German. Founded 12 years ago by Mike Bickle, a self-trained evangelical pastor, with a group of 20, the International House of Prayer, in a former strip mall, now draws tens of thousands of worshipers to its revival meetings. A wholly devoted cadre of 1,000 staff members, labeled missionaries, have given up careers to move here, living off donations and spending several hours a day in the prayer hall to revel in what they describe as direct communication with God. Another thousand students attend the adjacent Bible college, preparing to spread this fervent brand of Christianity.

The webstream is available online and through apps for tablets and smartphones. On May 7, 1999, the International House of Prayer began in the “old trailers” on Grandview Road, with 13 hours of prayer and worship each day. Mike Bickle and a small group of intercessors and worship leaders staffed the prayer room. Our hearts overflow with thanks to the Lord for His grace and faithfulness to us over the years. Forerunner School of Prayer, which would later become International House of Prayer University, was founded in 1999, equipping people to intercede and lead a lifestyle of prayer. Over the last 25 plus years, the Lord has graciously given us about 25 powerful prophetic experiences that provide insight into what will happen in the days ahead in Kansas City, the USA, and other nations.

The developer, International House of Prayer, indicated that the app’s privacy practices may include handling of data as described below. Mr. Bickle has won praise from many evangelicals, but he has also been criticized by some pastors for what they describe as unorthodox theology and a cultish atmosphere, charges that Mr. Bickle rejects. Some former students said they had been expelled for questioning the fascination with mystical healings, prophesies, angels and demons. When the two first met, Bob Jones told Mike Bickle that the Lord would use him to pastor a young adult movement of singers and musicians who would pray for Israel and have strong ties to Asia. Mike initially didn’t believe Bob, but two weeks later it was confirmed to him that Bob, in fact, had heard from the Lord. Bob, who passed away in 2014, played a pivotal role in encouraging Mike during the early years of the movement and was a great friend to IHOPKC. The ministry has also drawn fire for helping Gov. Rick Perry of Texas plan a day of prayer in Houston, which is scheduled for August and will be dominated by ardent opponents of abortion and gay rights. Mr. Bickle said he avoided direct involvement in partisan politics himself, but a member of his leadership group, Lou Engle, has a side group, The Call, that organized stadium revivals to promote California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage.

Lenny and Tracy La Guardia led the first Children’s Equipping Center camp just outside Kansas City. They’ve since grown to hosting multiple camps each summer and have seen camps established across the US and internationally in places like Poland. A few of the children who attended that first camp in 2002 are part of our staff today as worship leaders, singers, and musicians. We hosted the first Onething conference in January 2002 at the Kansas City Convention Center with several thousand worshipers. For the next 16 years, we were blessed to host an average of 20,000 young people who gathered in person and online to encounter God through extended times of worship, teaching of the Word, and ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Mike Bickle’s online teaching library launched in 2009, offering its resources to anyone for free. Equipped with audio and video teachings, study notes, and other resources, the library spans over 30 years of Mike’s ministry. The diverse topics featured include intimacy with Jesus, prayer, the Sermon on the Mount, and the return of Christ.

Over the next two years, we gradually moved our center of operations from the trailers in Grandview to the new location at Red Bridge Center equipped with much-needed office space and meeting rooms. We also expanded our facilities during that time by providing a kitchen for the internships and starting work on a coffee shop. The first internship began with five young adults, including Misty Edwards, Alisha Powell, and Aaron Walsh. Since then we have expanded to five different internships and have had the privilege to be part of equipping thousands of interns who have gone on to staff prayer rooms across the US and abroad (as well as our own prayer room). We have arranged special rates for our IHOPKC visitors with some local hotels that we partner with. Whether you’re coming to Kansas City for one of our events or simply to spend time in the prayer room, be sure to mention the International House of Prayer in order to receive this special rate when you call to make your reservation.

International House of Prayer, a Ministry Growing Into a Movement The New York Times

international house of prayer

These supernatural experiences were given to several prophetic people in the 1970s and 1980s. They include times when various believers saw the Lord, heard God’s audible voice, saw an angel, or had prophetic dreams that were dramatically confirmed. Other outreaches include Children’s Justice Initiative to serve orphans and children at risk.

The History of IHOPKC

We are partnering with Women’s Life Center, a local crisis pregnancy center helping women who refuse abortion and choose life. In the future we plan to provide homes and restoration programs for victims of human trafficking and domestic violence, and prostitutes who respond to the gospel. A few years after the prayer room opened in 1999, prayer meetings began in Spanish, Korean, and Chinese.

Sunday School Lesson Book

A movement of unceasing worship with prayer had begun, which, in the grace of God, shall continue till Jesus returns. Weekends at IHOPKC are designed as a three-day experience for those who desire to grow in the knowledge of love of God, be renewed in their spiritual life, and spend time in an environment of 24/7 prayer. Come encounter God in the prayer room, in the classroom, and at our weekend worship and teaching services.

AUGUSTA, GA: Local Pastor, Turned National Leader, Honored With Street Naming

Following in this tradition, in 1999 the International House of Prayer started a prayer and worship meeting in Kansas City. On September 19, 2009, while celebrating our ten-year anniversary together, we made a sober commitment before God to combine 24/7 prayers for justice with 24/7 works of justice until the Lord returns. However, at that time, we set our heart to significantly increase our outreach and ministry to others outside our missions base. Thus, we are developing many new outreach ministries that will continue 24/7 alongside our 24/7 prayer and worship. We expanded our setup to seven cameras and our schedule to full-time streaming.

We held the last (for the foreseeable future) Onething conference—an annual tradition since 2002 which has attracted tens of thousands of believers to Kansas City. The last Onething built on themes of the reset, with a more spontaneous and family feel that included times of corporate confession, intercession, and repentance. During our 19th anniversary, about 1,000 Chinese church leaders from across the globe joined us in Kansas City. This four-day gathering called Convergence was greatly used by the Lord to shift our IHOPKC community into a reset with a renewed commitment to prioritize growing as a family.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The worship music, throbbing soft-rock appeals performed by live bands, has continued here without pause, day and night, since May 1999. Our vision is to prepare thousands of full-time intercessory missionaries who, like John the Baptist, live a lifestyle of discipline and devotion to God, whose lives and voices cry out, “Prepare the way of the Lord! ” We invite you to visit the prayer room in person or join us online via the free live webstream. Join with us as we set our hearts to love God, worship Him alone, and dedicate our lives to serving Him without reservation; to demonstrate our love for others in works of service, justice, outreach, and compassion; and to proclaim the return of Jesus. On May 7, 1999, the International House of Prayer of Kansas City (IHOPKC) was founded by Mike Bickle and twenty full-time “intercessory missionaries,” who cried out to God in prayer with worship for thirteen hours each day.

We joined Youth With a Mission (YWAM) in a commitment to help raise up one million intercessors for global missions, furthering the partnership between IHOPKC and YWAM and the joining of missions and prayer. We announced our partnership with Every Home for Christ (EHC), one of the largest and most effective missions organizations in the world. Our newly renovated university campus opened its doors to returning and incoming students, offering much-needed additional space from its previous building. For the first time at IHOPU, students from all three schools—Forerunner School of Ministry, Forerunner Music Academy, and Forerunner Media Institute—were united on the same campus that year.

We are thankful for all those who have served on staff—from the first worship song in the old trailers on September 19, 1999 to today. I’ve loved this app for the years I’ve had it, and it has really pushed me deeper in the Lord in seasons of my life. A few things are broken now; you can’t search sermons by teacher anymore (if you try to it crashes), and managing my downloads doesn’t work (will also crash). The sermons are amazing, I love the worship, and the all nations prayer room is a blessing too. Mike is the author of several books including Passion for Jesus, Growing in the Prophetic, The Pleasures of Loving God, After God’s Own Heart, and Prayers to Strengthen Your Inner Man.

On March 21, 2002, we acquired Hernnhut Apartments next door to the prayer room on Red Bridge Road. This tremendous resource has housed many staff members, interns, and visitors from around the world and continues to serve as a great asset to our ministry. Please observe social distancing, mask wearing, sanitizing and all other health and safety rules. Sometimes it takes talking to someone to figure out what you’re interested in studying and to discover the school or program that best fits you.

He appeared on Charisma’s Strang Report earlier this month to share a prophetic word regarding the war in Israel, and earlier this year held a fast for the “salvation of Israel,” which Bickle says will bring about the Second Coming. Bickle’s charismatic megachurch—which has offered round-the-clock prayer and worship since its founding in 1999—was informed of the allegations on Friday, according to The Kansas City Star, which obtained a recording of the announcement. Our Global Classroom offers an unparalleled experience and dynamic training with no boundaries. IHOPU obtained permission to accept international students, and the first students from outside the US arrived for the fall semester of 2010. Today, students come from countries as diverse as China, Tajikistan, Egypt, England, Korea, Canada, and Brazil to encounter Jesus in His Word and in prayer with worship.

After receiving specific direction from the Lord, Mike called churches in Kansas City to a 21-day solemn assembly of prayer and fasting. During that time, the Lord gave a prophetic word to do “24/7 prayer in the spirit of the tabernacle of David.” This birthed 16 years of prayer meetings held three times per day at the church Mike was pastoring. He now says the word was the continuation of what he had first heard in the hotel in Cairo eight months earlier, that the two words are linked. Our missions base offers a series of activities and training programs that occur on a weekly basis, such as classes from our bible school, internships, evangelism opportunities, prayer meetings, and more. Experience a five-day immersion into the life of an intercessory missionary at IHOPKC, perfect for people in the workplace, home, and ministry who don’t have the time to join an internship. We celebrated twenty years of 24/7 prayer with worship, grateful to the Lord for His grace and leadership.

Our record label, Forerunner Music, was founded in 2001 by Nick Syrett, with the studio opening on the Shiloh property in spring 2001. IHOPKC worship leaders, singers, and musicians from the prayer room, including Jon Thurlow, Misty Edwards, Jaye Thomas, and Laura Hackett Park, have been featured on around 150 albums from Forerunner Music. At IHOPKC, Bickle emphasizes fasting, prophesy, the spiritual realm, and the end times. Some consider his ministry a part of the independent charismatics, though he has rejected the “New Apostolic Reformation” label.

The following documents are given as a help and encouragement to us all to live out a happy, healthy, and holy lifestyle. Bickle, 68, has been accused of sexual misconduct “where the marriage covenant was not honored,” according to a statement released Saturday from a group of former IHOPKC leaders who investigated the claims. Mike Bickle, the founder of the International House of Prayer of Kansas City (IHOPKC), is facing allegations of sexual and spiritual abuse spanning decades and involving multiple women. The Isaiah 19 Initiative is committed to building up a culture of prayer within the Body of Christ for the highway of worship, unprecedented unity, and the completion of the Great Commission in Egypt, Assyria, and Israel. In the last few years - God has started tearing down the structures of old and is raising up a new expression to this generation.

We believe we are better equipped for ministry when our lives are rooted in prayer and worship and focused on intimacy with God, as we intercede for a breakthrough of the fullness of God’s power. The IHOPKC community exists to partner in the Great Commission by advancing 24/7 prayer with worship and proclaiming the beauty of Jesus and His glorious return. Bickle agreed to pause from preaching and teaching while the church engages “outside parties to assess and arbitrate the allegation,” IHOPKC leaders announced during Sunday’s service and on social media.
